The Managing Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO) is responsible for overseeing and directing the programming, production presentation and administration of international calibre musical programmes at the National Arts Centre including a robust music education program. The Managing Director, NACO, collaborates with the Music Director to create a spectrum of classical music programming that furthers the artistic mandate of the National Arts Centre. As a member of the NAC’s Senior Management Committee, this position reports directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer.
The Managing Director, NACO, oversees the development and evolution of a broad and ambitious range of education programming, including artist training, professional development of arts administrators, youth and family programming, distance learning, and the development of classroom resources – with a special attention on serving Canadians regardless of their location.
The selected candidate ensures the expansion and increased profile of the Orchestra’s outreach and engagement through digital strategies and regional, national, and international touring.
Other duties and responsibilities:
Develop and foster a close and effective collaboration with the Music Director and other musical artists to:
- Develop and realize a long-term vision of the NAC Orchestra and classical music at the NAC within the local, national and international communities;
- Create programming and shape the overall programming content in a way that balances the aspirations of the performing artists with the needs and tastes of the patrons;
- Direct the staff of the Music Department to engage artists and programme repertoire that will attract revenue to the NAC in the form of ticket sales, corporate sponsors, government support and private donations; keep the NAC a focal point for excellent music in Canada;
Oversee the budgeting of the seasons, the forecast of revenues and expenditures and have budgetary approval on all classical music programming presented or produced by the NAC;
Foster and promote productive and respectful relations between the musicians of the NAC Orchestra and the NAC;
Provide the planning and organizational leadership for music programming including supervising the Programming Department staff responsible for music programming, presentation and production;
Participate in the selection of the Music Director as a member of the Music Director Search Committee and advise the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on all matters relating to the Music Director;
Provide reports and recommendations to the CEO and/or the Board of Trustees as directed by the CEO.
- Actively contribute and participate as an expert member of the senior management team in key decisions and in setting the direction of the overall NAC;
- Close collaboration with the Music Director and regular communication with the CEO and senior management;
- Work closely with the Production Director to oversee the production of NAC music productions and representations;
- Regular liaisons with government bodies in the areas of arts and culture including the Canada Council, the provincial Arts Councils, the Department of Heritage, the Department of Global Affairs, etc.;
- Regular liaison with labour, professional or advocacy organizations such as the American Federation of Musicians, Orchestras Canada, League of American Orchestras, etc.
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in music or a related field of study and a minimum of 10 years’ senior level experience in the classical music industry;
- Extensive knowledge of classical music and artists;
- Comprehensive knowledge of the orchestra industry;
- Highly developed leadership and management focus;
- Ability to develop, articulate and realize a vision for music programming at the NAC;
- Experience in working effectively with musical artists and arts professionals;
- A track record in making wise and timely decisions to achieve strategic goals;
- Strong analytical and strategic thinker that enjoys fast-paced, dynamic environments that require flexibility and a capability to adapt quickly to change;
- Excellent negotiating skills as well as a strategic vision;
- Exceptional interpersonal, managerial and organizational skills;
- Understanding of the sensitivity required when working in a creative environments;
- Knowledge of marketing techniques and sensitivity to audience buying choices;
- Commitment to the mission and core values of the NAC and ability to model those values in service delivery and partnerships;
- Demonstrated ability to inspire and empower individuals and enthusiasm for working collaboratively with a dedicated team;
- The seasoning and confidence to be credible at the senior level of the Centre as well as with the highest levels of the federal, provincial and municipal governments;
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with members of senior management as well as members of the Board of Trustees;
- Excellent language skills in either English or French with at least a basic proficiency in the other language.
