Resumes are being accepted for the position of Manager of Theatres and Civic Events with the City of Guelph. Reporting to the General Manager of Culture, Tourism and Community Investment, the successful candidate will oversee the programming, promotions and operations of the River Run Centre of performing arts, and the programming of Civic Events in the City’s downtown community spaces. Duties:
- Provide visible and positive leadership to staff consistent with the commitments of the City’s Leadership Charter, developing and nurturing a work environment that is inclusive, respectful and motivating for staff.
- Recruit, train and lead staff and volunteers, establish and monitor performance and development plans, provide coaching and discipline as required.
- Develop goals and objectives for the area, set action plans to achieve them; align goals with the Corporate Administrative Plan.
- Lead with a focus on Health and Safety within the Occupational Health and Safety Act, support local Joint Health and Safety Committees, lead monthly inspections.
- Develop and monitor capital and operating budgets, track actual performance against budgets, provide financial forecasts, report on variances and mitigating strategies, analyze ticket pricing and ensure gross margins are maintained.
- Support the pursuit of grant funding for programming, projects and events; support reporting to funding bodies, ensure compliance of deadlines.
- Liaise with Manager of Cultural Development to ensure that sponsorship and development stewardship obligations are followed within the facility, grow relationships with donors and sponsors for healthy growth of support to the Centre and programming.
- Ensure compliance with Collective Agreements, City policies, Council resolutions/by-laws and other applicable federal and provincial legislation; support all legislated inspection and safety programs.
- Recommend and prepare staff reports and presentations for Council and executive teams, as required by the General Manager.
- Actively program and market the River Run Centre professional arts season and school series; make both artistic and financial decisions, balance the needs of the community, promote the season to maximize ticket sales and growth, negotiate contracts and work with presenting network.
- Manage and balance current professional arts seasons, monitor budgets, negotiate changes and impacts, respond to marketing needs, offer onsite logistics and artist support, act as Emcee.
- Manage the facility operations of the River Run Centre, oversee repair and maintenance, schedules, identify efficiencies, respond and approve changes, ensure work is within budgets, ensure high quality of operations and service.
- Liaise with current and prospective clients to increase use of the River Run Centre, foster relationships within the community, assist with development of client events.
- Lead the programming and event management for Civic Events at Market Square; program, coordinate, lead event staff, offer on-site event management.
- Support and liaise with other departments on special events as required; offer programming and logistical support, offer on-site event leadership.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Considerable knowledge and expertise related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through a post-secondary diploma or degree in arts administration and facility management or a related discipline, and progressive responsible experience within the performing arts/entertainment sector including experience in cultural facilities, programming, marketing and development; candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Considerable experience managing, leading and training staff and volunteers in a customer focused environment.
- Understand the needs of the performing arts/entertainment sector, corporations, community groups, educational institutions and other potential clients.
- Considerable experience programming a professional arts season.
- Considerable experience in event marketing and promotion; marketing of professional arts programming.
- Experience of donations, sponsorship and development campaigns, initiatives and packaging.
- Skills in grant applications, writing, and reporting, and general report writing.
- Demonstrate leadership skills acquired through considerable experience leading and motivating staff.
- Detailed experience with financial systems, budget forecasting, variances and financial reporting.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to resolve customer inquiries/complaints in an effective manner; demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement and quality service.
- Excellent communications skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public.
- Strong visionary, leadership and supervisory skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, meeting deadlines, ability to multitask, as well as the ability to work under pressure.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
The regular work week will consist of 35 hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.
