Key Activities

Reporting directly to the Managing Director and working closely with the Artistic Director, Indigenous Theatre, the Producer has a critically important leadership role within the department and the NAC itself. The ideal candidate is a skilled producer/administrator with an artistic lens who has an established understanding of creating and presenting Indigenous work, the relational nature of this work and making it work within the NAC context. Someone who likes a challenge, working in a strong team dynamic, and likes creating really great, meaningful, impactful change through the work - including how we produce the work - on the stage. The Producer supports, develops, and produces a broad range of programming (in-house productions, presentations, community and audience engagement activities), and will actively participate in internal and external activities and committees, daily decision-making, contracting, budgeting and financial operations.

Duties shall include, but not be limited to:

  • Work with the Artistic Director, the Managing Director and the production department in planning, scheduling and delivering season activities, on time and on budget, including developing and managing season budgets and providing analysis on a show-by-show basis;
  • Work with colleagues at the NAC to ensure full support of productions including venue scheduling; box office documentation; marketing and communications needs; Finance requirements etc.
  • Assist with the scheduling and delivery of corollary engagement activities;
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with co-producers, presenters and the local, provincial and national theatre community, including associations such as IPAA, PACT, CAEA and UdA;
  • Work with colleagues at the NAC to implement and promote company-wide practices to ensure a safe, healthy and welcoming environment for all who work here, including visiting artists;
  • Specific health and safety responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring cultural protocols presenced; working with the Technical Director to communicate safety protocol; facilitating Not in Our Space, and assessing the need for and creating extraordinary risk riders;
  • Support the Associate Producer/Company Manager in the care and coordination of visiting artists with administrative staff and stage management;
  • Reconcile and negotiate final settlements with co-producers and presented companies;
  • Contract artists, directors and stage management under terms and conditions of the Canadian Theatre Agreement and associated agreements;
  • Work with the Production department to contract designers under the terms and conditions of appropriate agreements;
  • Work with the Managing Director on all budgets, budget management, co-production and presentation agreements;
  • Day-to-day department-specific financial management, including pay schedules and payment requests for actors, stage management, designers, independent artists etc.
  • Ensure all licensing agreements are in place;
  • Support the Associate Producer/Company Manager in creating and maintaining documents for incoming productions and/or artists;

  • Participate in mentoring and leadership exchange opportunities as required.
Requirements: 

Skill Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of education & experience);
  • Experience with producing work in a professional context, particularly under the terms and conditions of the Canadian Theatre Agreement and other related agreements;
  • Experience creating and producing work with Indigenous artists, creators and community and/or equity deserving groups is a definite asset;
  • Strong verbal and writing skills in English; fluency in verbal French and/or Indigenous language is an asset;
  • Strong sense of creative processes, and ability to anticipate and support the needs of theatrical artists and producers;
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills, able to coordinate a variety of activities simultaneously;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and understanding of the sensitivity required when working in a creative environment;
  • Familiarity with, and deep interest in, the theatre industry landscape at local, national, and international levels;
  • Experience in creating budgets and financial goals;
  • Experience with the contracting of artists, and awareness of trends in production in the context of the Canadian Theatre Agreement and agreements with PGC, ADC and ACTRA;
  • Computing skills including Microsoft 365, MS Teams, Adobe CS;
  • Ability to evaluate and manage priorities and adapt quickly to a fast-paced, complex environment;
  • Ability to maintain discretion and absolute confidentiality at all times;
  • Experience and/or interest in arts education is an asset.

Salary: 
$82,000 - $120,200/year

Flexible. This role involves frequent evening and weekend activities. Occasional travel may be required.
