Job Description: 

 Reporting to the Manager, Hospitality, the Theatre Technician provides technical support and logistical coordination in the day-to-day operation of the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre including responsibilities related to the theatres lighting, sound and rigging equipment. The 1029 seat facility is frequently used by both internal departments and the local community as a professional theatre venue. Bookings range from lectures and convocations to plays and concerts.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Oversees activities pertaining to the provision of technical support and the effective utilization of Theatre facilities; communicates on a regular basis with clients and other members of the college community including faculty, staff, and administration in order to identify scheduled activities and assess equipment and staffing requirements.
  • Designs lighting, audio, staging requirements per client’s instructions.
  • Acts as a resource to faculty and students by demonstrating equipment, facilities and/or software used in theatre and supplying technical information for such in class and/or lab situations.
  • Installs and operates theatre operating systems that support College activities & objectives; determining and implementing alternatives to address production needs; consulting with clients with regard to technical specifications and applications and making recommendations.
  • Coordinates the logistical execution of plans for upgrading facilities that support the objectives and practical applications of management (College & clients); provides all relevant information and data  to management for the preparation of submissions to acquire and/or upgrade facilities (e.g. Major Project proposals, Capital Equipment, R.A.M. requests, business plans, ministry documentation); follows up as required in contacting vendors and industry representatives regarding the purchase of equipment.
Requirements: 

The successful candidate will have:

  • A minimum of 2 year diploma or certificate in Hospitality, Events Planning, Business or related field; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of industry or equivalent experience working in a similar role or capacity for a theatre or performing arts centre.
  • Strong customer service skills with demonstrated genuine client focused service delivery.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build rapport and develop business relationships.
  • A high level of attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of ETC Ion lighting console and Digico SD9 audio console an asset.
