June 22, 2020
This National Indigenous History Month, we want to recognize the continued great work of our Indigenous colleagues and all of the talented Indigenous artists from Turtle Island. We are so thankful for the diversity of vibrant cultures that are rooted in this land, and the artists that continue to share their stories, ideas and culture with all of us.
We also want to recognize that although the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s report came out almost four years ago, few of the calls to action have been implemented in a meaningful way. Here’s where you can view the calls to action for: language & culture, and media. We are taking this moment to remind ourselves and our culture sector colleagues that we cannot stop working to support not only Indigenous culture and language, but Indigenous lives. We must work to examine our role in the structural racism the remains prevalent in Canadian policing, culture, and daily life. This work continues well beyond one day or month.
As we continue to work with our Indigenous colleagues to celebrate Indigenous art and artists, Ontario Presents is thrilled to partner with 50/50 Performing Arts Collective to co-present Tkaronto Music Festival: Presents An Indigenous History Month Celebration!
We invite you to join us this Wednesday, June 24th for our Annual General Meeting at 4pm (open to OP members), immediately followed by TKMF Presents from 5-7pm ET (free and open to all).
We at Ontario Presents are honoured to work with TKMF to celebrate Indigenous talent! Not only is this an amazing evening of artistry, but it’s a chance for OP and the membership to continue to reflect on the importance of presenting Indigenous artists and stories on all stages.
TKMF Presents is free and open to all, please feel free to share with your own audiences through your marketing channels.
The event will be headlined with a powerful and one of a kind performance by Juno nominated alternative-electronic artists Iskwé, soul and rock band from Vancouver Old Soul Rebel, singer/songwriter musician from the Six Nations of the Grand River James N Wilson, and a special poetry performance from Mahlikah Awe:ri. The event is hosted by award winning actor Glen Gould. This event will kick off with an opening by renown poet, journalist, and activist Elder Duke Redbird. The event will be broadcast live at www.TKMF.ca, on Facebook @TkarontoMusicFestival, and on Youtube Live.
